Notice to residents: USGA to conduct survey by Helicopter

Starting around July 8 and lasting for up to a month, a helicopter towing a large hoop from a cable will begin making low-level flights (100-200 feet above the surface) over the Delaware Bay and lower Maurice River area as part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Next Generation Water Observing System project.

Data is being collected to improve the understanding of groundwater salinity and below-ground geology.  Rising sea level, increasing frequency and intensity of coastal storms and increasing demand for groundwater have amplified the risk for saltwater impacting water supplies in the region.

It should be noted that the flight lines of this helicopter will be visible from any location for short periods of time.   The company will be working with the FAA to ensure flights are safe and in accordance with U.S. law.  Surveys do not occur directly above populated areas.
